Cast

The action takes place in an Italian village in the 19th century.

ACT I

Nemorino, a poor young peasant from a village near Florence, is consumed by his love for the beautiful Adina. She, however, capricious and ironic, treats him with indifference and rewards him only with jokes, just like the other admirers who surround her.

One afternoon, Nemorino overhears Adina and her friend Gianetta reading and excitedly discussing the legend of Tristan and Isolde, the story of the miraculous elixir that sparked their love. Fascinated, the girls imagine what it would be like to have such a magic potion.

A detachment of soldiers, led by Sergeant Belcore, appears in the village. Confident and charming, he notices Adina and, without hesitation, begins courting her insistently. Amused, she rejects his advances but politely invites the soldiers and their commander to her farm to dine and rest. Nemorino, tormented by jealousy, tries to approach Adina, but all his attempts meet with her refusal.

Then a colorful character arrives in the village: the traveling doctor Dulcamara, who loudly praises his “miraculous” potions and remedies. The crowd gathers around him, curious, and business flourishes. Desperate to win Adina’s heart, Nemorino approaches him and begs for a love elixir. Taking advantage of the young man’s naivety, Dulcamara hands him a bottle of ordinary wine, claiming it to be the magic potion of Isolde, warning him that its effect will only be felt the next day.

Impatient, Nemorino drinks the entire bottle on the spot. Intoxicated, he becomes cheerful, playful, and even distant toward Adina, confidently declaring that by tomorrow he will be “cured” of his tormenting love. This unexpected change hurts the girl, and out of pride, she decides to accept Belcore’s proposal. When the sergeant receives his marching orders, Adina decides to hurry things along and set the wedding for that very evening. Suddenly, Nemorino sobers up and realizes he is about to lose her forever. Desperate, he falls to his knees before Adina and begs her to postpone the wedding by at least one day.

ACT II

The courtyard of Adina’s house is full of guests. The atmosphere is joyful, and among the guests is Dulcamara, pleased with his success. Meanwhile, Nemorino, tormented by the thought of losing Adina, searches for money to buy another bottle of the “elixir of love.” Belcore, taking advantage of his rival’s weakness, offers a solution: to enlist as a soldier in exchange for twenty scudi. With no other way out, Nemorino agrees, takes the money, and rushes off to find Dulcamara.

At that very moment, the village is shaken by unexpected news: Nemorino’s wealthy uncle in Milan has died, leaving his nephew his entire fortune. Everyone learns of this except Nemorino, who is too preoccupied with his “elixir.”

Fortified by a new dose from Dulcamara, the young man regains his courage. Suddenly, all the village girls, led by Gianetta, begin showering him with unusual attention. They already know of his inheritance, but Nemorino believes the potion has finally started working. Dulcamara, astonished, is ready to believe his own bottle truly has magic powers.

Adina, seeing him surrounded by girls, feels jealousy for the first time and realizes her true feelings. Dulcamara offers her a vial of the elixir as well, but she refuses—she needs no magic, the conviction of her own heart is enough.

Alone with Nemorino, Adina calls him and hands him the enlistment contract, which she has redeemed herself. At last, she confesses that she loves him. Nemorino’s happiness becomes complete when he also learns of the inheritance.

Belcore, left without a bride, accepts defeat with humor and declares that the world is full of women waiting for him. Dulcamara, taking advantage of the general confusion, sells out his entire stock of “elixirs” and leaves the village. The villagers celebrate Nemorino and Adina, and the story ends in a hymn of joy and triumphant love.
